Wouter Van de Voorde
CF Gallery and Photobook Melbourne present a very special exhibition as part of the Photobook festival (12-22 Feb 2015).
Belgium born and Canberra based, Wouter Van de Voorde spent the winter of 2014 photographing sunrises in a square kilometre of horse paddocks in between highways. Reminiscent of European landscape paintings, it comes as no surprise that Wouter has his roots planted firmly in painting. These days, he works almost exclusively with a medium format camera, creating atmospherically charged colour dreamscapes and considers himself a painter with a camera.
“Early morning fog is one of the features of the Canberran winter rendering non-places into mystical wastelands. Wandering through these paddocks while shooting this series I imagined soldiers running through the fog, bombs, grenades, WWI… The photographer as a lone soldier wandering zig zag across the front-line in a brief instant of cease-fire. Until the sun breaks through the fog.”
Van de Voorde’s world is one in which you stand arms out, alone, embracing the landscape as though you’ve never seen anything like it previously. There is a certain type of silence present, one which is both welcoming and warm. Entire and self aware, (hume) sunrise has lifted the bar for contemporary Australian landscape photography.
All works are pigment ink on cotton rag.
