8pm – 11pm, Beijing, 2008

8pm-11pm is a documentation of Beijing’s transformation over a one-year period in the lead up to the 2008 Olympics.

In this exhibition Rohan has attempted to capture the tension of the transformation in China’s social community as it succumbs to the pressures of gentrification. This is explored through documenting the change in the geographical landscape within the impoverished districts. The photographs presented are created to give the viewer a direct insight into how the landscape works as a canvas in time, capturing the moments of reality in the lower class community.  Shot mainly around the Qianmen district the work shows the direct ramifications of China’s approach to urban renewal in lead up to the 2008 Olympics.
